The DUTCH Test stands for Dried Urine Test for Comprehensive Hormones and involves collection of a small amount of urine on filtered paper four times a day. The DUTCH Test measures hormone metabolites from the dried urine samples.
While hormone blood tests are a useful tool, they are not the same as the DUTCH Test. What makes the DUTCH Test better than blood or saliva tests is the comprehensive information that is collected with a single test. The DUTCH Test is well-recognized for its ease-of-collection, coupled with comprehensive reporting that is not currently available from other tests.

If they are manifesting as sleep, stress, anxiety, depression, or energy problems, testing your adrenal hormones and their rhythms gives specific information about how to handle these problems.

Also includes fibroids, PMS, irregular periods, painful periods, moodiness, and endometriosis. This test is highly beneficial for these issues. It gives a complete picture of how adrenal and reproductive hormone imbalances contribute to these problems.

It’s important to monitor your levels. This test works uniquely well for oral progesterone, vaginal hormones, patches, pellets, and injections. Note that this is only for hormone replacement therapy, not hormonal birth control pills!

It's important to check melatonin and cortisol. Melatonin can be low, or cortisol can be high, and either of these situations can cause sleep problems.

This is a “feel-good” hormone produced by your adrenal glands. When it’s low, it can cause fatigue, a decrease in muscle mass or bone density, depression, aching joints, loss of libido, and lowered immunity.

This is when the scales are tipped so that progesterone is low and estrogen is high. Estrogen dominance can be a factor in endometriosis, PMS, painful periods, fibrous breasts, fibroids, tender breasts, moodiness, and more. It can make perimenopause symptoms significantly worse.

When we can identify issues that are causing you so many problems, we can drastically improve your health.
DUTCH testing is a great way to look at the “why” of your hormonal symptoms or imbalances. It goes deeper than just looking at the levels of hormones estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone and looks at how they are being metabolized. The metabolites and their pathways can add so much more to the picture. Even if your hormone levels are “normal” looking at the metabolites and their pathways can tell you much more specifically how to treat with supplementation or lifestyle changes to address your symptoms. The cortisol awakening response part of the test also gives more than just your level of cortisol. This shows how its rising and falling throughout the day and shows your adrenal output.
All of these things together can give so much insight into what is really going on with your hormones. Testing is easy with an at home kit that gets shipped to you with all the instructions on when and how to collect. I then give my lifestyle and supplement recommendations to each patient based on their results. All the information can be shared with your OB or other providers as well if hormone replacement therapy is needed.
